Classic Rock Fan Community: Led Zep, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Doors & More

A lot of people thumbed their noses at David Bowie when he first began back in the 70's, but I wasn't one of them. I was a country girl, living miles from any civilization and the only music I could pick up on my little transistor radio was an AM radio station, WLS out of Chicago.

Not until I graduated high school and journeyed out into the world away from the farm, did I learn there was other music besides what my little radio could pick up.

Actually, that's not completely true. I was beginning to realize there was a whole new world out there when I was fourteen years old and sat glued to the television watching the news coverage about Woodstock.

I first became aware of David Bowie when I sat at someone's house one day listening to this new kind of music that I had never heard before. I picked up the album cover and stared hypnotically into the eyes of this strange creature. The album was David Bowie's "Aladin Sain", and I fell in love. Not with the face that I was seeing; it was the voice that I was hearing.

The town that I lived in was so small, that I had to actually buy my albums at Sears, and then they controlled all incoming music. So it was hard to find any David Bowie albums. I would have to travel to the big city if I wanted to find the good stuff. And being "Good Stuff" illiterate, I didn't know what was out there.

Not until maybe 1975 or 76, was I able to buy an 8-track (the wave of the future) of David Bowie's "Diamond Dogs". If I knew then, what I know now, I would have bought the album instead. BUT I HAD TO HAVE IT!!

It's still hard to find any early Bowie in my area, but I can proudly say I do now own Aladin Sain. It took my friend Martin, who lives in England, to find it in a classic music shop and mailed it to me.

Linda - thanks for the great post and videos! David Bowie is certainly an interesting character! In my opinion, he is a little quirky (with his glam rock period), but he certainly has some amazing songs like Space Oddity, Changes and Golden Years. I really do need to get more into his albums though - what do you think is his best album? I am also looking forward to reading more posts from you :)
