Thanks Robert, I think Kid A and OK Computer really are pretty amazing. To me, landmark albums are ones that you can listen to over and over and still marvel at them or find something different in them each time you play them...and there aren't a lot of albums that do that. I'll have to check out Animal Collective definitely and Fleet Foxes too. Thanks! I'm always looking for new sounds :-)

Fleet Foxes although new have definite potential to be one of the all time greats. Check them out. I have not heard anything like them. They have the best vocal harmonies. Think Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young combined with the Beach Boys. Fleet Foxes' debut really blew away.

Also Animal Collective. They make music that's very out of this world. Their music is very indescribable. Very avant garde. Their like Folk mixed with tribal music mixed with psychedelica. But I swear they're the best band of the last 10 years.

Kudos on the mention of Radiohead's Kid A and OK Computer. Also Neutral Milk Hotel with The Aeroplane Over the Sea album. It's a masterpiece. Too bad the musician is a recluse now.

Tiff I agree with you. It seems there aren't a lot of original sounds coming out these days. I think that if you hear a certain band and say... only so and so sounds like that... then that is one of the highest compliments you can bestow on any given band. I have always admired bands that have some original style, wrinkle, or sound that is in some way unique. Not an easy feat to pull off... which is why the really great bands of our time are so far and few between. I guess it's called "talent"!!! And when a really transcendant album comes along it's so amazing because to me it's as if someone bottled a rare vintage of creativity. Kind of like bottling up lightning in a way. Some of the newer people to come along like Beck, White Stripes, Incubus, Radiohead & Nirvana when Kurt was still alive can really stir the pot because they are so different in a way. Think about what are the most landmark albums in the past 10-20 years and there aren't a lot of them. Radiohead's Kid A and OK Computer are definitely up there..Odelay, Guero by Beck, Incubus - Morning View, Nevermind by Nirvana, Weezer's Blue(first)album, NIN last 2-3 albums maybe.
I don't know there are probably a few others but it does seem as if originality is getting harder to find these days. It's interesting to note how new intense periods of change appear to happen about every 15 - 20 years look at the 60's and 80's vs. the 70's and 90's perhaps in the new millenia we are about to see another real explosion in creativity. We'll see..I'm optimistic anyway ;-)

This is very hard to determine seeing as that most of the bands have a hard time doing their own thing. What has the world come to with lack of use in the right side of the brain, seriously it's depressing. However I feel that TooL did a decent job making a stand for themselves, I really dig Cult of Luna which is pretty hard core vocally but musically they are jet setting to a new element of rock/metal music. The Black Keys are great, only two guys and they sound amazing, the lead singer Dan Auerbach has a nice gritty voice, and the music is a bit blues but I really like it because it reminds me of the softer stuff LED did. I love Cat Power's voice, she is the new Fiona Apple aka the new Janis for our time. The Hoosiers kind of remind me of The Beatles so thats not too bad. Jeff Buckley is one of my favorite artists too bad he had to leave us so soon. His voice was so versitile, going from Lover You Should've Come Over to Eternal Life, iust pure greatness. I do like Muse, they have their own sound for sure, and I like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. They are not so new but still a top on my "newer band" list, same with Soundgarden and NIN. I like a wide variety of music but nothing will be as raw and full of heart like music from back in the 60's-70's for me.
