Classic Rock Fan Community: Led Zep, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Doors & More

I have to say I am a huge fan of the Doors movie by Oliver Stone - in particular Val Kilmer did such an amazing job of looking like, and sounding like Jim Morrison, that it was almost surreal. However, I do have a few issues with it - I believe they made Jim Morrison look like a drunken poet - there was so much more to his personality than just that - if you read some of the many books about him, you will learn that.

Indeed, in a 1991 interview with Gary James, Ray Manzarek criticized Stone for exaggerating Morrison's alcohol consumption in the movie, saying, "Jim with a bottle all the time. It was ridiculous . . . It was not about Jim Morrison. It was about Jimbo Morrison, the drunk. God, where was the sensitive poet and the funny guy? The guy I knew was not on that screen."

Also, many of the things that occured in the movie never actually happened - like how Jim met Pamela, the part where Jim lights the closet on fire, and even the Ed Sullivan 'higher' incident was altered. Indeed the existing members of the Doors seemed to think the Oliver chose to alter stories more to his liking.

I agree with you Rich, Oliver Stone did a fantastic job with this movie. Sure it may not be totally accurate, but it gave a good sense of the time and a lot of what Jim Morrison was like and went through. I agree he spent a great deal of time alone writing and he wasn't always drinking. I think the part that upset the rest of the doors was showing the downfall of Morrison. It wasn't easy for him to be so famous. He was a quiet sensitive man and it was very difficult to be idolized. I have met people who met him and they said he was very quiet and this one Girl I knew said he acted like a complete gentleman with her and was not the monster that people think he was. I say enjoy the movie because it helps you see what it was like to live in the 1960's. I'm fortunate that I got to live it - for those who didn't it gives them a chance to see what it was like.

I am a huge Doors fan ( Matter of fact, while sitting here at the computer I have a Jim Morrison T-shirt on.) In the years leading up to the release of the movie I was in a huge Doors obsession. I was reading everything I could get my hands on and constantly listening to the Doors. When the movie was announced I was electrified with excitement and could hardly wait to see it. Since I had read a wealth of books on the topic I knew it would be a great event to see images to the mental pictures I had during the reading of the books. I was not disappointed! From the opening scene to the final Paris scene I was captivated. LOVE IT! Oliver did a great job putting this film together.
As far as being to the letter on facts...only Jim knows...it was a film and it expressed the subject well. I think if directors stuck to the letter during the creation of movies...they would be a bit boring.
Oliver Stone was applying artistic license.
