Classic Rock Fan Community: Led Zep, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Doors & More

1: Baby Come on Home - Coda (1993 complete studioes recording version)
This album gets very little credit - but the 1993 version of this album added in 4 extra songs to this album, one of which is truly a classic, but never really gets any love. Robert Plant at his emotional raw best.

2: Tea for One - Presence
Another album that is often ignored by fans, Presence, has a great hidden gem in 'Tea for One'. Jimmy Page just oozes bluesy passion with his masterwork that dominates this song. Dealing with the band's homesickness, this was made shortly before Bonham's death and so sadly this song was never played live.

3: Thankyou (live) - Live at BBC
Already a great song, this live version is perhaps the best version of this song. What makes it so great in particular is an excellent guitar solo by Jimmy in the middle of it. Really changes the song up - and some might say should have been in the original version.

4: I'm Gonna Crawl - In Through the Outdoor
This song is so sexy and powerful. You can really sense Robert Plant's emotion behind this - John Bonham proclaims its his best performance ever. Play this to any woman, and she will be putty in your hands. This song also was never played live by Led Zeppelin.

5: The Ocean - Houses of the Holy
This song is probably my personal favorite non-mainstream Led Zeppelin song, thats also on my favorite album. This song just plain rocks. And the 'do-wop' style bridge in this song is probably one of the best bridges in any song ever (John Paul Jones and John Bonham sing too - they only time on any zep album). Period. Go listen and marvel at the musical genius behind this song.

Where's that confounded bridge?

I think Coda is still in two forms. The original and the extra tracks (sans Bonzo's Montreux/ Moby Dick...) only available on the box set version of the CD / LP. Wonder why? Thankfully I have the box set for my latest purchase of the catalogue.

All Zeppelin songs are underrated. Some are overheard (nobody's fault but ours), same ones are overplayed (nobody's fault but format (i.e. lack of imagination) radio) - but getting the intricacies of the material is usually beyond the scope of a music genre (rock) that refuses proper analysis.

Just one gripe with a Zeppelin number and to me it's a biggie. The edited (!!#@#$!!) version of Black Dog on the new Song Remains. Apparently the soundtrack was to not interfere with the album (as if this is an explanation). Dunno why, the soundtrack only ever had occasional moments in common with the album anyway. Ever read that Garden Tapes break down?

and many others..

So who's doing the under rating? (Not me! or anyone else here so far as I can see.) Unless Led Zeppelin are seen as a one or two (may be three with WLL) hit wonder. I told a pal once that neither of Zeppelin's biggest hit songs (All My Love and Stairway) were singles as per the usual popular music spectrum. He was surprised. Apparently this was important...

They were never any good as a singles pop group anyway. No choruses, Whole Lotta Love released 28 years after it was an album track and no one took a blind bit of notice of the others.

Now as an album and concerts band par excellence where composition demanded much of their audience (look at the content of a 77 show for example); paying attention to that lot would have been well taxing. Not to mention the playing - the first hour would blitz the abilities of anyone else just on the varied guitar approaches alone...)

Time to ramp up these ratings. What do people do with their Zeppelin albums anyway? Play with the covers or something..

Hey- I know this is quite an old discussion but I've got a good one. Into the Light from Physical Graffiti ? It's weird- like almost starts out sorta prog rockish and uplifting and trippy. I mean there's a theremin for gods sake. But then it slips down to a really hard sexy zep chorus. I love it. It's rad and strange and no one ever knows it.

STUDIO:

1. The Rover - Excellent Hard Rocker from PG. It wasn't included in their Greatest Hits "packages", and wasn't on the first crop cirlces set, but it's a stand out. Really too heavy for most CR radio stations.

2. Four Sticks - The first time I listened to IV, with the headphones on, this was the mesmerizing track for me.

3. Candy Store Rock - It's just too much Fun from Presence ! !

4. Friends - What a marvelous campfire song from III ! ! !

5. I'm Gonna Crawl - Just can't get enough of this blues number !!

(HM - Carouselambra - Boy, would I have loved to have seen them do this live ! ! ! !)

LIVE:

1. No Quarter - (TSRTS) Exquisite !

2. Kashmir - (O2) So much more powerful than the classic studio version.

3. OTHAFA - (TSRTS) What and incredible riffing solo from Mr. Page !!! (Probably too hot for CR Radio playlists).

4. SIBLY - (TSRTS) Perfection !

5. TSRTS - (TSRTS) Once again, blows the studio version right out the water ! ! !

(HM - IMTOD - (O2) Amazing !!)
