I was reading a discussion on AC/DC and someone made the comment that Brian Johnson was the best replacement singer ever. So it made wonder what everyone's thoughts on replacement band members was. So who is your favorite? But don't limit it to singer but ANY member.

Mick Taylor has got to be near the top of the list!

What do you think?

The Brian Johnson story is a great one. I remember seeing the  band he was in - 'Geordie' -  on 'Top of the Pops' on TV a few times. After they split up he went back to his home town, Newcastle, and was earning a living fixing up cars. He had a phone call one day from an agent in London who said an un-named band wanted him to audition. He turned it down as he had a car to sort out. But the agent didn't give up and continued to contact him and the rest is history. All of the guys, including Bon Scott, had been aware of Brian's vocal style for some time.

Back on thread - How about Dave Gilmore for Syd? Also, although many would say Peter Green, in an artistic sense, was irreplaceable, Mick Fleetwood must have thought he'd won the lottery when he eventually discovered Lindsey Buckingham.

Two GREAT ones John, and such cool story about Brian!

RINGO replacing Pete Best

This one completely slipped my mind!!

WOW some of these must have been very early-on in these bands evolutions. I'm not aware of alot of these. Though I might argue with the Yardbird progression was a bettering trend! And Noel Redding had a destinctive sound. And speaking of Bernie Marsden I preferred Whitesnake during his era!

Yeah I really ment as replacements go who were the better ones, not who were better than whom they replaced. I was just making observations. It was just a means of openning a dialogue and to that end it has. Jones was the perfect replacement at the time (big Faces fan) but Zack Starkey is a better drummer IMO!

I have to agree in some to Brian's vocals though on the records I think he sound great! I have never heard anything live where he even sounds ok, most of the time it's pretty awfull. But I love AC/DC now and then. Bon was the man.

Here's a few....

Steve Howe replaces Peter Banks-Yes

Ringo replaces Pete Best-Beatles

Max Weinberg replaces Vini Lopez-E Street Band

Lindsey Buckingham replaces Bob Welch-Fleetwood Mac

great list of course Welch was a replacement member himself!

Some that just came to my mind are Steve Gaines for Ed King

and birthday boy Jonathan Cain for Gregg Rollie

Phil Collins replaces Pete Willis in Def  Leppard july 1982. and went on to record Pyromania and is still with the band today.

Not greatly familiar with Def Leppard's history but i know they have endured some tragedys over the years.

Mark surely that was Phil Collen and not cuddly Phil Collins?
