Steely Dan - Classic Rock?

I saw Steely Dan last week - two fantastic nights - and although they are a little more jazzy than other classic rock groups I think they have a place in the genre.

Interesting question! My opinion, as the founder of this website? I think close, but no cigar. I just don't think they have quite the right sound. A little too poppy/jazzie to be included in classic rock. Don't get me wrong - I like this band, but I just don't think they are classic rock. Same as bands like ELO and The Cars. They are also close to be classic rock bands.

I would definitely love to hear everyone else's thoughts though!

I think their early stuff is classic rock. The thing that stands out is the quality of their studio work, it seems like every note is in the right place -- even in their guitar solos.
