The Eagles - middle of the road music or life in the fast lane?

The Eagles do certainly have some truly amazing classic rock songs, particularly Hotel California and One of These Nights. But in my opinion, they appeal a little too much to the middle of the road music fans to be a truly great classic rock band. And some might argue their musical prowess pales against the likes of the members of Led Zeppelin, The Who and The Rolling Stones. What are everyone's feelings on The Eagles?
