Tom Petty is a true musical genius - and has been putting out consistantly great music since the mid 70's - with his band the Heartbreakers, and solo. In my opinion, he is very under-rated is a performer, which is a shame. He has some truly amazing songs - Into The Great Wide Open, Refugee, Learning to Fly, American Girl, Breakdown - the list goes on. What are everyone's favorite Tom Petty songs and albums? Do you think his solo material is better than with his band? Any good concert stories? Lets get discussing about Tom Petty!

I don't think I can ever get sick of "American Girl". That is just rock n roll.
This is my favorite part:

"And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God its so painful
Something thats so close
And still so far out of reach"

I also like "Don't come around here no more" a lot. His voice is awesome.

No good concert stories, but I just picked up the live album "pack up the plantation" today. The version of "breakdown" is really cool with the audience participation. I was surprised to see he covered "Needles and Pins". Weirdly enough though, I don't think anybody can beat the Ramones version of that song... which is weird because its a very non-ramones kind of song. His cover of "shout" is a lot of fun to listen to, and you can tell he was having a lot of fun playing it.

Bottom line is Petty is just the man.

I love most of his stuff.  His last album, MOJO, was excellent!  Saw him in concert with the Heartbreakers in 2010 and can honestly say, it was one of THE BEST concerts of my life, spanning more than 40 years.  Just to make it even MORE special, the opening act was Crosby, Stills & Nash.

I love most of his stuff too, but Rebels is my favorite.
