Canned Heat's song Up The Country became the unofficial anthem of the festival after the release of the 1970 documentary Woodstock. You can read about them on my blog http://blog.mjmurphy.com

I'm fascinated by Woodstock.  Unfortunately, I wasn't old enough to attend (I was only 9 years old) but I went to the site for the first time last summer and felt a kindred spirit.  And this past summer I went there again to see Ringo Starr in concert.  I'm a hippie at heart!

So much went wrong in the beginning but it created memorable moments. The roads were clogged so organizers talked Richie Havens into going first. He played for two and a half hours. The next act was supposted to be Sweetwater, but they couldn't get through, so they talked Country Joe McDonald, who wasn't supposed to perform until Sunday as a group with Country Joe and the Fish into going on stage. They found a guitar, tied a rope around it (check out the pics).  He came out and sang nine songs. The most memorable was the Fish Cheer which preceded the Feel-like-I'm-Fixing-to-Die-Rag, better known as Next Stop Vietnam. "Give me an F...."
