Hey Joe

When you think about this song you immediately think of the version by Jimi Hendrix, first recorded in 1966 by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. It’s usually held as the classic version of this song. I’m also partial to the version by Deep Purple on their first album Shades of Deep Purple in 1968.

Were you aware Seal, Robert Plant, Buckwheat Zydeco, the Standells, Patti Smith, Alvin Lee, the Byrds and Roy Buchanan all recorded covers of… Continue

Hey Baby Que Paso

In 1965, a little tune called She’s About A Mover by the Sir Douglas Quintet rocketed up the charts. It was a great song and most people thought it was the next big thing from Britain. Turns out organist Augie Myers and guitarist and lead singer Doug Sahm and their bandmates were from Texas. And it was the next big think alright – Tex-Mex.

Flash forward to 1990, add Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez and the next big thing was born – The… Continue

A New England

Billy Bragg is an English alternative rock musician, who I first discovered through my brother Jim. Thanks, Jim. And I’ve bought pretty much everything he’s put out since.

He played in a punk band, busked throughout London and collaborated with other musicians, perhaps most famously on a couple of albums with Wilco which set Woody Guthrie lyrics to music.

Imaginary Voyage

In 1976, after spending several years at university followed by a couple of years in the working world, I’d returned to school to study journalism. A fellow classmate introduced me, musically, to a fusion violinist – Jean-Luc Ponty. I think I still have the album he “loaned” me, to this day.

The sound was something new to me and I liked it. The album was called Imaginary Voyage.

In Memory of Elizabeth Reed

Duane Allman, founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, passed away as the result of a motorcycle accident in 1971, just weeks shy of his 25th birthday. Yet, he was an in-demand session musician, spent several years in that capacity at famed Muscle Shoals, traded licks with Eric Clapton on the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs By Derek and the Dominos and formed 2 other groups with brother Gregg before they achieved success as the… Continue

The Joker

In 1965 the Goldberg-Miller Blues Band was gigging in Chicago and New York and appeared on Hullabaloo. Half the group’s namesake – Steve Miller – left the group for the psychedelic scene of San Fransisco and formed the Steve Miller Blues Band, which was shortened to the Steve Miller Band when they landed a contract with Capital records in 1967.

Heart of Glass

In the late 70s I was working the evening shift, Mondays thru Saturdays at a Canadian all-news radio network. Anyone who knows about shift work knows that their internal clock is screwy. Would I go to bed when I got home? No I’d usually make myself some dinner and watch Carson. But Saturdays were even better. That’s when Midnight Special aired and that was must-see TV for any rock fan.

I recall new wave having an influence on music… Continue

Space Oddity

David Bowie had an out of this world hit – literally – when he released Space Oddity in 1969. The BBC used the song during it’s Apollo 11 moon landing coverage. Talk about exposure. The song went to #5 in Britain. However, in the States it couldn’t even crack the Top 100.
