Rivaling "Free Bird" as the best-known Lynyrd Skynyrd song, "Sweet Home Alabama" has, in many ways, endured better than that Southern rock classic. Arguably, it encapsulates everything the genre is about. Written by Ed King, Gary Rossington, and Ronnie Van Zant, the song is a slice of Southern pride, celebrating the land, its spirit, and its music.
Years after its original 1974 release, the song had transcended the category of rock classic -- it had become part of modern American culture.
