Metallica - overrated, hmmm not sure I agree with that. nice list and thx for input..

Hmmm... I have a hard time considering any post 1979 music as "classic rock".

Rock music has its roots in 1940s' and 1950s' rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by rhythm and blues and country music (The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Zep, Dylan). By 1979 it had drawn additional influences from jazz (Chicago, Steely Dan, Blood Sweat & Tears), classical (ELP, Rick Wakeman), folk (all the singer-songwriters of the 60’s and 70’s) and other musical sources.

All of the principal rock sub-genres had emerged by 1979: blues rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, folk rock, country rock. jazz-rock fusion, punk rock, etc. The instrumental composition centered around the electric guitar, bass guitar, drums and occasionally keyboards had been as well established by 1980 as the artistic showmanship and visual style. All the acts and style emerging after 1980 (metal, alternative, grunge, indie, fusion, etc.) are, in one way or another, variations of the looks and styles created by the acts of the 60’s and 70’s. That is why they are considered to be “classic”.
