He may have crossed to the other side "break on through, break on through to the other side" but his presence is still definetely around this side 40 years later. Morrison's legacy together with The Doors music continues crossing and breaking through several generations of fans, those who were there when The Doors set the charts on "fire" and those who were born too late to have witnessed The Lizard King spreading his gospel in real time. Not many bands who were around back in the day have the same impact, influence and aura that The Doors and Morrison still have to this day. Sure we all love Steppenwolf or Jefferson Airplane just to name a few, and as a hardcore rock fan I still think the music of those two bands is as fresh and cool as it was back in 1968, but, if you ask a 12 year old kid who just discovered rock n'roll what band amongst those he knows the best or if he knows any of those 3, his answer will be, almost for sure, The Doors. There's a magic and mystic on their music, on Morrison's persona that very few bands achieved in such a short career time. Sure the legend might help, the ultimate rock star cliché of the wild rocker in leather dying with 27 might have contribute to that, however, I truely bellieve that if the music wasn't powerfull and special, there would be no dead young rock star in the world that could have lasted 40 years influencing new generations. So today, it's a day to celebrate or remember Jim Morrison's life and his important gift to music and culture, so put on even if just one Doors song, and let yourself go.
Cheers
David
