I was lucky enough to get to see Tom Petty play at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday October 1st. It really was a fantastic experience and he reeled back the years - pretty amazing for a band that just celebrated their 30th anniversary together! Hollywood Bowl is always an amazing venue, and it certainly didn't disappoint. Tom raced through a few early numbers, before getting into the first crowd favorite 'Last Dance with Mary Jane' - a great version. He then played Refugee, Breakdown and Free Falling - three classic songs, and then got into a rare cover version by Fleetwood Mac called 'Oh Well' a really bluesy number that matched the feel of their excellent new album called Mojo (it really is one of the best albums I have heard this year). I was pleased to hear that his favorite song from the new album was also my favorite song on the album - Something Good, which really rocked the house (which has some definite overtones of the Beatles 'She Aint Heavy').

He also played a few other new numbers, but soon went back to the classics, with Learning to Fly and Don't Come Around Here No More (one of my favorite Tom Petty songs - I even recorded a video of this, see below). He closed out (somewhat disappointly early - just a 90 minute set) with the crowd favorite 'Running Down the Dream', and the song I knew he would end the night on - the always great 'American Girl'. All in all, an amazing concert. Anyone else see him in concert this tour? Anyone else love his new album?
