Cole,
If you like Brothers in Arms, here's another one to check out: Follow Me Home off of the Communique album. (a vastly underrated album by the way!)
Now that I've read the top of the page I know Stairway isn't a choice because too many people would choose it but yea I totally agree about Knopfler. Brother in Arms is such beautifully subtle guitar playing and Billy Gibbons is great too.
You are right about Stairway and it is surprising to be absent from the list. It is integral to the flow of the song; as opposed to just electrons thrown in for the sake of ego! It really should be on the list. There are a few others that should be on the list too. I'm surprised that there aren't any of Knopflers. Brothers in Arms? Telegraph Road? Also missing: Billy Gibbons!
Too hard to pick but one of the most iconic to me is whole lotta love but not necessarily my favorite. Also heartbreaker but all these solos are worthy of number one. An underrated solo that really moves me and is so minimal is Pink Floyds Mother but I can't really argue with comfortably numb at number one although I'm shocked Stairway isn't listed. I'd say for sure Gilmour Hendrix or Page are my favorite soloist.
The solo should flow with the song and fit into naturally. BTW: a lot of those listed above aren't really solos! I am really glad to see that Alvin Lee is mentioned in the comments. Ten Years After was magnificient and went away too soon.
I was confident ERUPTION would lead this poll--
Back in the Grunge years, I started shopping again for some rock cds and picked up Van Halen while away at college. The album blew me away and I still own the same disc I bought all those years ago!
I read online that Van Halen is recommended as a top 3 Shred Metal pick!
I see there's a vote for While My Guitar Gently Weeps - George Harrison. It is a well-known and documented fact that Eric Clapton played that solo.
not the best but one of my favourites is the end by the beatles
triple solo with two bars each - pretty coo
But it has to be the Dazed and Confused live!
Had to add Steve Hunter solo on Intro/Sweet Jane by Lou Reed-the man kicks it out!
