Jan 1, 1967 The Doors Start to Break Through

New Years Day, a day of new beginnings, new resolutions looking forward to a new year. Jac Holzman, founder of Elektra Records wanted to make sure 1967 started with a bang for The Doors, the band he was hanging his hopes on to break into the rock world. The first part of the plan was The Doors debuting on the TV show, Shebang.

Shebang was a local dance show on KTLA TV in Los Angeles hosted by Casey Kasem and produced by Dick Clark, both of whom would go on to long careers in radio and the television music industry. The Doors were confined to a small onstage riser, while they “lip-synched” their musical performances, only a few times does it look like Robby Krieger or John Densmore aren‘t quite into it (Robby smiling a bit at some half hearted strumming on his guitar), while Jim Morrison, perhaps still dressed in clothes he wore on Venice Beach or crashing on someone’s couch, gave a very staid performance of “Break on Through.”
