When you think about this song you immediately think of the version by Jimi Hendrix, first recorded in 1966 by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. It’s usually held as the classic version of this song. I’m also partial to the version by Deep Purple on their first album Shades of Deep Purple in 1968.
