1972 – Brian Cole, 28,one of the original members of the Association, dies of a heroin overdose.

1973 – Singer John Phillips of the Mamas and Papa sues ABC/Dunhill Records for $9 million, claiming that the label cheated him in royalties. The financially strapped company does not survive the decade.
